M42
NGC 1976, Const: Orion, Type: Emission Nebula, Mag: 4, Size: 85'x60'
- 03/06/03 - HX916 image of M42/M43 (f/5.4, TV101 on G11, LRGB
of 70:30:30:30 [35 x 2 minute unbinned L, 15 x 2 minute 2x2
binned RGBs taken over two nights], STV eFinder guided, from
home (seeing 7, transp 5, tracking 0.4X, 0.4Y @ 1 sec for L,
0.7X, 0.2Y @ 2*0.5 sec for RGBs). Processing: AIP (dark
calibration and stacking), MaxIm (DDP on L stack), AIP
(color combine and G2V color balance), PaintShop Pro
(resized 50%, rotate to North-up orientation).
- 03/01/03 - HX916 image of M42/M43 (f/5.4, TV101 on G11, LRGB
of 20:10:10:10 [10 x 2 minute unbinned L, 5 x 2 minute
unbinned RGBs], STV eFinder guided, from LBV (seeing 3,
transp 4, tracking N.R.). Processing: AIP (dark calibration
and stacking, color combine and G2V color balance),
PaintShop (50% resize).
- 1/30/03 - HX916 image
of the Trapezium w/ E and F stars at
f/40 (f/40, Meade LX10, a stack of 10 0.50 second
images], unguided, unbinned, not dark or flat frames
applied, from home [seeing 3, transp 4]), Processing: AIP
(stacking), MaxIm (DDP:FFT-LowPass Medium, cropping,
conversion to JPG)
. The seeing was really poor but I had
just given up on shooting Jupiter and Saturn and thought I'd
see if I could image the E and F stars of the Trapezium. The
poor seeing is evident, but they're clearly visible.
- 2002-Dec-03 - HX916
image of M42 (f/4.6, Meade LX10, an LLRGB
composite of 20:10:10:10 minutes of exposure, 10x2 minute
unbinned luminance (L-IR), 10x1 minute RGBs binned 2x2), STV
guided, from Anza (seeing 6, transp 7, tracking 4.0X, 2.5Y @
0.5 sec]). Processing: AIP (dark and flat calibration,
stacking), MaxIm (2X resized RGBs), AIP (color registration,
color balanced using G2V then Black Sky), PaintShop Pro
(increased brightness on non-trapezium region, LLRGB
processing).
- 1/16/02 - HX916 image
of M42 (f/6.3, Meade LX10, 10 minute
total exposure [a stack of 10 1 minute images], STV guided,
binned 2x2, only dark frames applied, from LBV)
- 10/18/01 - film image of M42/M43
(LX10 at f/6.3, Meade LX10, 30 minutes, STV guided,
brightness and contrast adjusted, Fuji 800 Superia X-Tra,
from LBV).
- 10/14/01 - HX916 image
of M42/M43 (f/6.3, Meade LX10, 10
minute total exposure [a stack of 5 2 minute exposure), STV
guided, unbinned, no dark or flat frames, no image
enhancements, from LBV).
- 11/22/00 - Film image of Orion belt and sword nebulas
(210mm@f/4.5, Meade LX10, 30 minutes piggybacked on LX10
autoguided with STV, Fuji Superia 800, 11/22/00).
- 11/25/00 - Wide-angle shot
of the Constellation of Orion
(35mm@f/4.5, Meade LX10, 30 minutes piggybacked on LX10
autoguided with SBIG STV, Fuji Superia 800, 11/25/00).
Interesting mainly as an example of the serious
spherical abberation (coma?) visible anywhere off-center and
significant vignetting. Something made this print very red
also (guess it isn't the computer screen). I adjusted the
contrast to bring out the various nebulae, including Barnard's
Loop (arc of nebulosity to the left of the belt and sword),
the Rosette Nebula above center to the left side, the nebula
NGC 2264 in which lies the Cone Nebula above and left of the
Rosette Nebula, and the large nebulosity (designation?) at the
head of Orion.
- 10/28/00 - Wide-angle shot
of the bottom of Orion (70mm@f/4.5,
Meade LX10, 30 minutes piggybacked on LX10 autoguided with
STV, Fuji Superia 800, 10/28/00). Something made the print
very red to begin with (it might have been the laptop's
red-filtered screen glowing below but in front of the camera),
and then I adjusted the contrast to bring out Barnard's Loop
(arc of nebulosity to the left of the belt and sword). Also,
note the Rosette Nebula in the upper-left corner of the photo.
- 10/28/00 - A high resolution
scan of the Orion sword area from the 210mm print of the same area. Open
cluster NGC 1981 is at the top of the image, NGC 1977 is the
open cluster and reflection nebula below that, then M43, M42,
and then reflection nebula NGC 1980 at the
bottom. (210mm@f/4.5, Meade LX10, 30 minutes piggybacked on
LX10 autoguided with STV, Fuji Superia 800).
- 9/30/00 - A mosaic of M42
using 6 STV images. I tried to get a lot of overlap but one
of the shots turned out very different for some reason, hence
the gap. I'll have to try this again. (f/3.75, Meade LX10,
track and accumulate (all at 4 of 15 seconds), all in wide
mode, from LBV).
- 9/23/00 - STV image of
M42/M43 (~f/3.75, Meade LX10 (with
star diagonal in), Meade LX10, 1 5 second exposure, wide
mode, from LBV).
- 9/1/00 - STV image of M42 (f/3.75, Meade LX10, 1 10
second exposure, wide mode, from LBV).
- 9/1/00 - STV image of M42 (f/3.75, Meade LX10, 1 15
second exposure, wide mode, from LBV).
- Digitized Sky Survey image of M42/M43 for
comparison (not a very good shot of these two, actually).
